The Importance Of Installing A Pool Fence

So you’ve made it to that pinnacle of suburban American living: pool ownership.  Your backyard is your paradise; the water is crystal clear, the pH is balanced, the landscaping pristine.  So what’s missing?   Only the most crucial safety measure a pool owner can and must have- a pool fence.

Pool fencing is NOT an option.  It is a necessity.  Given that most people aren’t able to hire a 24 hour lifeguard, a fence is generally the safety measure recommended (and in most cases, required by law).  Why, you ask?  Your pool, for as much enjoyment as it gives you, is an inherent safety hazard. 

Think about it- it’s a big hole full of water.  And yes, we know you can swim; we’re sure you’re not attempting triple backflips from the top of the garage, and we fully understand that the kids are only allowed to hold each other under for so long.   But if you think that being personally responsible is enough, think again.

Most state and local laws require pool fences by ordinance.  This is because you are responsible for ANYONE who goes into your pool with or without your permission.  If the kid next door wanders over while you’re at work, the consequences extend to you.  Aside from this, there are also the hazards of unwelcome pets, wild animals, and the neighbor’s leaves.

So if you own or are planning to own a pool, you have to make some determinations.  Step 1: find out what the local laws are regarding pool fencing.  How far from the pool/edge of your property it has to be, whether it must lock (a common rule), and what it can or can’t be made of.  Step 2: determine what kind of fence suits your needs. Aluminum and mesh fences provide great protection while retaining visibility.  Fiberglass fences are durable, but pricier.  There are also accessories to consider- key lock or simple closure?  Decorative posts?  Height? Infrared motion-sensitive alarms?  Bear in mind your personal preference, durability, cost, and ease of assembly.

 And don’t forget- an above-ground pool does NOT disqualify you from the need for a quality safety pool fence.  In all cases, fencing makes your backyard paradise as safe as it is enjoyable.
